Mel ate the last bite of her cupcake. “So, is the J guy football player Rune?”

“I don’t know.”

“What’s the juju say?”

“It says I don’t know.”

“You’re useless.”

“Yeah, says the woman who can’t talk to the dead.”

“I can talk to them. They just don’t talk back.”

“Oh, they talk back, but I’m the lucky one for that.”

“Right.”

“Katie didn’t say anything about Jeff Rune. If he’d been doing anything to bother or upset Gen, wouldn’t she know?”

“Maybe Gen was afraid to say something? Maybe she felt like she’d led him on or something and didn’t want to look like a tease.”

“Or maybe Katie knows something and doesn’t want to tell us,” I suggested.

Mel raised her eyebrows. “Why would a ghost hide something trivial like—oh. I think I get it.”

“Do you think Katie had a thing for Jeff?”

“Actually, no,” Mel said. “I was thinking Gen had a thing for Jeff and Katie had a thing for Billy.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“In my head it makes complete sense. Gen’s dating Billy Higgins, but secretly has a crush on another football player, Jeff Rune, who was very likely Billy’s friend since they both played ball together. She tells her besties, and one of them happens to be crushing on Billy, so she tells Billy, and suddenly, Gen’s gone.”

Mel just had what people call a drop the mic moment.

“Holy crap. You think Billy killed her?”

“It makes sense, don’t you think?”

“She gets her brains from me,” Ma said. She’d just popped in behind Mel.

“Oh, geez.”

“What?” Mel asked. “I’m onto something, and you know it.”

“No, my mother said you get that from her.”

Mel laughed. “Love you too, Fran.”

“Please don’t encourage her.”

“Hard not to when she’s on my side.”

“Moving on,” I said sternly. “Let’s map this out. Gen is dating Billy but secretly flirting with Jeff. Maybe he shows up at the theater one night, or they get caught giving each other the look or something, and people begin to talk, so she starts saying he’s stalking her or whatever. But she tells her friends the truth. Katie has a thing for Billy, and being a teenage girl, thinks telling him about Gen and Jeff will break them up.”

“According to him, they didn’t break up. They were supposed to be faking it, but he’s not even one hundred percent sure that happened,” Mel said.

“Yes, but it’s not mentioned in her diary. Not the pages I took photos of anyway.”

“Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”

“And she didn’t tell anyone,” I said. “Be honest, could you keep that secret at that age?”

“I couldn’t at this age.”

“And she doesn’t say anything about running away with Billy.”

“But she did allude to a fresh start,” Mel countered.

“Not with Billy. In fact, she says even he doesn’t get her or know her, or whatever it was.”

“But no mention of Jeffrey Rune in the diary, and he didn’t sign her yearbook, did he?”

“Not that I’m aware of. We read all the signings, but I don’t recall one from a Jeffrey.”

“Recheck the yearbook,” Ma said. “I got a feeling you missed something.
